HW 1 - Banach's Lecture part 1

David Banarch's "The ethics of Absolute Freedom" 's part one lecture is based on Individuality and freedom. Going over the first lecture in class, there were some words that needed to be read over and discussed within my group. Beforehand we came up with some text-reading strategies. One strategy that i practiced was "dumbing down" the words in which i can understand easily. Right from the start, the text sarts the reader off with a grasping hook with the statement "The modern conception of man is characterized, more than anything else; by individualism." Of course the term individualism will be magnifined even further in this transcript. Although no actual definition is provided my take on individualism is that it describes all persons as individuals and what separates them. The transcript is broken down into sections that help the reader to get an idea of what existentialism is, seeing how there isnt just one simple answer.

I thought that individuals being refered to as "absolute" was interesting because to be called absolute individuals meant to me that we are all 100 percent different. the main argument so far in the lecture was that we percieve things differently, such as images and experiences. Images like the ones that you see one or the other in it, and in order to catch the other image you have to focus hard. When humans look at these photos in an unfocused glance, they only see the first thing that comes to mind, and whether you see two people kissing or a candlestick in one photo, it says alot about that person and theyre state of mind, so it says.

  1. I liked how you explained the skills you used when it comes to an article like David Banarchs thats sounds like a great skill that maybe I would use on the next article we read. I think we are absolute 100 percent different in every way. This makes me question then why do people try to look or act like someone else? when at the end of the day we are who we are as a person. we Cant really look o act like someone else becuase we are all DIFFERENT!. Thats also ture on how everyone do have their own interpretation of something that they see or think b/cach person hows their own way of thinking and how they view the world. Just how in the picture you either see it as two candlesticks or two people kissing, or two big heads.

  2. Chris,

I appreciated your writing skills, constantly moving forward, never rambling on about what you "feel." you also set a non bias tone, just setting straight what you know. It was a refreshing blog to read.

The first sentence of your second paragraph was straight to the point, I would assume the strategy you mentioned in the first paragraph contributed to the comprehension, and I Understand that the way that we all see things are different.

Honestly, i can't connect to others because you seem to not have a sturdy opinion which is good because it is making me think existentialism is almost a religion, and you are an outsider looking in on people.

I think that you could have added how two people with opposing view would fight about who is right, and give them fair side, to go with your non bias theme.

I am definitely taken back, i have been always told to to pick a side. For the Banach lecture I feel like it is what verbally sounds better because both sides seem equal.

Again thank you for the inspiring post i hope i am able to read more.
